How about cardinal flower and my monarda gets some shade for perinnials and maybe impatiens for an annual.

I have never grown Cardinal Flower before, and thought it was a sun plant . It's a great idea, and I just happen to have two I bought at a sale. I put them in a sunnier bed, but they flop over in the heat, so I think I'll move them to the shadier garden, where maybe they'll be happier.

I was also going to suggest the red cardinal flower. How about red astilbe? Perhaps some red daylilies and/or lilies?

My red cardinal flower is on the north edge of our woods and grows great in shade all day. It's in it's first year in the ground and the blooms are spectacular. The red is SO rich and luxurious, it's a "must have" if you are looking for a red.

I also suggest astilbe. It's one of my favorites because I think the plants look great even without flowers. Have you considered red leaves? Lots of heucheras have reddish leaves and do well in shade. I also have a fern called 'Lady in Red' that has red stems, although the leaves are green. Japanese painted ferns have some red in the leaves too.

Indian Pinks (spigelia marilandica) is a lovely N. American natve with great red flowers, yellow throats. The only drawback is the short bloom time, but it's very carefree. -Ais.

You might also try silene virginica (firpinks) in the spring, silene regia (royal catchfly) in the mid-summer and spigelia marilandica(Indian Pink) for early summer. All will tolerate shade quite well. Firepinks and Indian Pinks will tolerate deep shade while royal catcfly does better with about 50% sun. Hummers love em all!
