Gardening in Shade

Any suggestions for something that will do well in the following: a bed on the northwest side of a brick house which, in winter and spring is totally shaded by the house all day, and in summer gets afternoon (hot, direct) sun from about 1PM on. Zone 8 near the coast of SC. I'd like to put something in there other than Liriope that won't die back in winter like hostas. Soil's a bit heavy / some clay. Foliage only or blooms - any thing! Thanks.

In my afternoon sun garden I use plants that are listed in catalogs as full sun/partial shade. The ones that are usually listed as just full sun don't get enough light, and the ones that are listed just partial shade get damaged. The ones listed full sun/partial shade do well. So I would say you can pick almost anything you want from that group if it is compatible with the type of soil and moisture in that area.
