i have a similar situation - fence line in shade - i am planning on planting some clumps of interesting grasses that can tolerate shade - i was thinking a mix of indian woodoats (chasmanthium latifolium), bottle brush grass (hystrix patula), and fowl manna grass (glyceria striata) and ... i think the grasses will make for nice winter interest ... but it might take a year or two before they fill in ... i know you were looking for shrub ideas so can ignore this post if you'd like - but i thought i'd share my thoughts for a similar area....

What zone are you in? Azalea, Camellia are nice evergreen additions. Fothergillia and Itea Virginica do well in 3 seasons.

Thanks for the responses-I am in Md.I actually have a large clump of "zebra grass" (a gift from a neighbor, not sure of the real name,6ft tall,3 ft wide)in sunny area of the yard that needs to be relocated to give it more space.I assumed it needed full sun-but I could try a division there.Azalias would work there,frothergilla is more interesting to me-they would only get sun after the tree leaves fall,wonder if they would get good color in shade.I'm looking for shrubs with multi-season interest if possible.I appreciate your ideas.

I think just making a mix of interesting shrubs would really be nice. I like the idea of frothergilla, dogwoods-yellow and red twig, camilllas are nice and evergreen plus have winter flowers..umm elderberries, forsythia (there are shade tolerant varieties), sweet olive tree, jap maples, azaelas, plus all the hydrangas, shade tolerant grasses, hellebores. oh my the choices are endless. Oh plus you can fill with anuuals impatiens, coleus, in summer and winter, pansies- mine did ok in part sun in the fall/winter/spring.. Just have fun and mix it up!
