I know daffodils and tulips get chilled enough just being in the ground in both Boron and Rosamond over the winter (both Sunset Zone 11). Of course, we had them on the northeast corner of the house in Boron and on the north side of the house in Rosamond, so they weren't getting a huge amount of midday winter sun warming up the soil.
