If you're talking about the old original red tip photinia, it gets about 15 ft. tall and wide here in the Valley of the Sun, growing about 3-4 ft. a year while it's young. Where you are, I would expect it to get a little bit bigger in the long run--due to slightly cooler summers--but to grow a little more slowly--due to slightly colder and longer winters. Most people keep it trimmed down much smaller.

There are a few new varieties that are dwarf, such as 'Indian Princess' and 'Red Robin'. Those usually run about 4-6 ft. tall and wide at maturity.

Cooler summers LOL! It's hard to imagine anywhere hotter then here in the summer. But at least our summer nights get cooler then some other places, and I think Phoenix is one of them. Yes, I am talking about the original Japanese one. I bought a 3 gallon on special for $7.50 and when I took it home I divided it to get two plants! What a deal! I plan on letting it grow pretty naturaly without pruning for tailored shrubs like is usually done with them. Since it will only get about 15 feet (I have read about others around 30 feet in other parts of the country), I think I will plant it close to my patio on the east side. But it will have full all day direct sun and provide some shade to the patio.

Hotter summers than Phoenix?? HOTTER SUMMERS THAN PHOENIX!!?? Oh, wait...wait...oh, yeah...Death Valley! You're next door to Death Valley! Sorry stomp, I must have had some brain fade there. Cooler nights, maybe, but I guess your area could easily average hotter in the day. Oh well, I'll be perfect tomorrow (remember that tomorrow never comes!) : l
P.S. Be sure to put on a heavy layer of mulch, and apply Dispersul regularly. That's what keeps red tip alive in the sun here in the Valley of the Sun. : )
