overwatering problems?

Earlier in the summer I watched one of my photinias slowly die. It looked like it wasn't getting enough water(which was not the case). I have 12 huge photinias in the yard and they were doing fine. Now the plant next to it is begining the same symptoms. I have a few braches out of the whole bush that the leaves are drooping. What is going to happen next is that the drooping leaves will spread througout. It looks like these few branches are dying of not enough water, however that doesn't make sense. I do not have any leaf fungus that I can tell. The leaves that are drooping look otherwise healthy. I have a clay type soil. I am wondering if I'm overwatering. Will only some braches be affected in overwatering?
