I have 4 foot beds, which gives me two feet to center for my arms to reach if needed. I use the Ladybug brand square foot garden mix for mine, but there are plenty of recipes on here to do your own.

Add to your list: a soaker hose setup and something to use as a top layer mulch for when it starts getting hot.

Thanks beacivil1, it is confusing and a HOT TOPIC, this mix issue. I don't intend to go on the cheap, but SHOULDN'T (Living Earth Technology) vegetable mix be good? This is a massive bed, and all that vermiculite and peat, which i read doesn't add nutrients to the soil...I don't know, I am a newbie...I know Mel's Mix is great.

Square Foot Gardening Blendâ¢

If you have been thinking about starting a vegetable garden, this is a wonderful way to begin. We worked with author and inventor Mel Bartholmew to formulate this sustainable blend for gardening by the square foot. This product contains a blend of five compost, coir fiber and coarse vermiculite. Simply open the bag and pour directly into your gardening box. This product can be used as a container mix as well.

Ingredients: A blend of five superior compost, Coarse Vermiculite, Coir Fiber

Bag size: 2 cu. ft.

I can only lay claim to the Ladybug mix, as that's the only one I've used and I had great results. Hopefully someone on here can chime in that has used your mix before.
