Square Foot Gardening

tomatoes, squash and zucchini

I was planning to plant two tomato plants, two summer squash and two zucchini in one 4x4 box, along with some peppers, broccoli, and onions and maybe some herbs (may put them in containers). I was planning to stake or trelis them but then I'm afraid they will shade the other plants too much. Any suggestions? This is my first try at SFG! I only have one box for this year.

Put the shortest plants on the South side of the box. Put the tallest plants on the North side of the box. I have a 4x8 box that is raised and elevated to standing height. Out of 32 squares I have about 20 in tomatoes. Others in peppers and herbs. I have about 200 tomatoes in various stages.

Do you know if your tomatoes are determinate or indeterminate? If they're indeterminate, they will definitely be the tallest, and should be on the north side (if you're in the northern hemisphere). The zuccini can spill over the side of the box. Broccoli is a cool season vegetable, so it will go in later in the year.
