Community Gardening

Hello,

I am a transplant and a 3rd generation gardener from Finland, arrived to Nashville, Tennessee via Champaign, Illinois. My husband is a farm boy who wanted to experience living in a city and therefore we live downtown in a high-rise building.

Gardening opportunities are not many in the asphalt jungle, and I had almost given up the hope of anything else but a small herb garden on my window sill. Then 'Hands on Nashville'(HON) volunteer organization announced that they have an informational meeting for community gardening on Saturday, January 14th, 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the HON office in Cummins Station building downtown.

I signed up immediately, and began to order seed catalogs and continued to do research on-line about gardening. It is like my whole life has been transformed!

If the project is at a starting point, there may not be any plots available for this growing season. Even if I cannot have garden plot this year, I am willing to put in some brain and sweat equity to have one the year after.

Welcome to Nashville. Check with the Davidson County Agricultural Extension Office (they are downtown also 2nd Avenue North?) they will be able to connect you to some other Community Gardens in the area through their Master Gardener programs or just general knowledge. This office is part of the University of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service, I am not sure of their exact telephone listing, but they can certainly help and serve as an information source for you.

There are tons of gardening societies (perennial, hosta, herb and more) as well as clubs and groups in the area. Join one and hang out even if you are a frustrated, displaced gardener for now. Check with Cheekwood Botanical Gardens, because most societies meet out there monthly.

And of course, there is hockey.

Here is a Nashville Community Gardens Project Update:

I attended the meeting today and I am a bit overwhelmed with information overload - the good news is that I will be able to have a garden this season, if I so choose! Yea! Camp Dogwood has room for me, I was also offered room in a private garden AND there is a community garden next to my church, I just never noticed it.

Several projects come to mind: finding like-minded people downtown to join the dream of a downtown community garden OR getting our church children and youth involved in a "Plant a Row for the Hungry" project OR volunteering for Camp Dogwood ...so many wonderful choices...

In any case I will have an opportunity to garden! I was really having difficulty really enjoying my life without a garden. February 11 the HON is hosting a Community Garden training session. It is free to the public and if you are interested just sign up on the HON website.

Welcome to the nashville area, If you get tired of community gardening you can always come out to my place and get your hands dirty.

I live about 2 hrs sw of nashville, come out for a day and enjoy the river.
