Sounds more like the fruiting body of a fungus than an insect.
But the Macodes sounds like it is gone. The little black criters would not be a factor in its loss.
This species is not an easy grower for anyone and is probably grown with constant repotting.
Your terrarium needs both humidity, air movement, and a dryish to slightly damp media surface that the orchid is on. Its stems do not like to be kept moist or exposed to water. Perhps mounting it using sphagnum moss to wrap the roots might work??? Have not tried growing it this way, yet.

thanks for the macodes advice...based on this, i think the culprit was the lack of air movement. my RH is always >80% and i feel like the substrate is ok...the roots of the macodes were doing awesome. i think any water on the plant caused its stem to rot since i dont have any constant air movement. i need to work on that...i was thinking I might try using an air pump and tubing around the tank instead of a fan, but im not sure how successful that would be. we'll see...

in terms of the bugs...well they move around so i dont think they can be fungus lol. but it sounds like they are not harmful to my plants...i guess i'll keep an eye on things so nothing catastrophic happens. thanks again!

Hmmm, The dots could be some sort of mite. Just to check you might shake some onto a white sheet of paper and see if they move. (Don't happen to have a magnifying glass would ya?)

Macodes is a bit of a prima donna so don't feel bad. However I wouldn't write it off as a loss. If you still have it, cut off the brown end and dust with rooting hormone (one with a fungicide) Lay it on a moist bed of sphag, perhaps lightly covering one of the nodes with sphag too.

NO, do NOT mount the macodes, it is a terrestrial orchid( meaning it lives in soil) Just try moving it to the end where the bug fungus(lol)isnt. Also, I have one growing in my terrarium which is moist all the time and mine has no problems.
