Hibiscus

I am a new resident (and gardener) to the Cumberland Plateau. Last spring I planted 2 hibiscus shrubs that did wonderful throughout the summer. The shrubs were planted within close proximity of the house/foundation for protection through the winter. Unfortunately, neither survived.

Was I wrong to assume these are winter hardy in this area of TN? Any advice?

There are over 200 species of Hibiscus. Some, like H. syriacus and H. coccineus, are completely hardy here. Many, like H. rosa-sinensis and H. sabdariffa, are tropicals and not hardy here.

What type is "Confederate Rose" Hibiscus? I have seeds to start, but before I assume it will be hardy here feel I'd best find out so I know whether to grow them "out" or in a container to bring in for over-wintering.

Confederate Rose is a "common" name for H. mutabilis. It's usually listed as hardy to 7a, so it's hardy in many places in TN.

There are cultivars of H. rosa-sinensis (not hardy here) that have the name "Confederate" in the cultivar name. But I don't think there is a cultivar named "Confederate Rose".
