I just found out that I've got Spinach Leaf Miners attacking my spinach. Gotta love this first gardening season for me. An extended winter, a crappy spring and now this. What a learning experience...

The white moth sounds like a cabbage moth :

i've got leaf miners too, they've nearly destroyed my spinach and are making good process on my chard. I sprayed some garlic on em yesterday. we'll see what happends. so far the only thing i've noticed is that my whole garden REEKS now!

Since I posted that it looks like I've also got either cutworms or slugs running ruffshod over my beans, cauliflower and broccoli. All my plants are peppered with holes.

I'm interested in the garlic on the leaf miners. So far it's been cut around them and eat the spinach faster than they can.

The holes in the leaves are likely from slugs feeding. You can find out by checking with a flashlight after sundown. I use a mixture of ammonia & water (1/10) in a spray bottle.

Meanwhile raising your soil Ph is a good long term solution. If you have powdered lime that may help to deter slugs also.

You can also use something abrasive like crushed eggshells, sand, or diamateous earth spread around the affected plants to discourage the little lawyers.

Others say that Iron Phosphate is a big help, I have never tried it.

engineeredgarden: How is it going with the the bugs? Have you found out what you have and how are you treating it?

sinfonian: Have you determined what kind of nasty little creatures you have? My brussel sprout and cauliflower leaves were getting ate up, holes all over them, and more toward the center it seemed like whole leaves were gone. I found little green caterpillar things (cabbage loopers). I have been spraying with Dipel, recommended by digdirt. I have sprayed 4 times because of rain, so not real sure how it is doing. I think I did find about 4 dead ones last night and this morning.

No real damage to anything,i'm inspecting the plants daily - and picking off any pests (then squishing the life out of them).I have a big bag of sevin ready and waiting,but don't want to use it until the blooms have been pollinated by the bees.
