Dormancy

I have recently learned that one of the plants in my small terrarium (a japanese maple in a 10x12" glass container) normally requires a dormancy period for the winter. Is this something I have to worry about? Can I ignore this suggestion or can I somehow simulate a dormancy period in the terrarium?

I grow japanese maples outside in zone 9B and they lose all their leaves and go dormant even when it doesn't freeze. A japanse maple is not really a good choice for a terrarium to start with. It's not even semi-tropical and does need the weather changes to be happy. My advice, take it outside, either in a pot or in the ground.
