I trim all my indeterminates to one stem and run them up their own 8 foot stake. So to answer your question, it depends on what you are trying to do. If you are planning on keeping them to one per square foot, you need to trim them down to one or two vines and grow them vertically. If you are giving them more room, you can do what ever you want. I do run two vines up the same stake on smaller variety plants.

Oh, and yes it is normal. They are vines so they will continue to grow side shoots known as suckers. If you want to stay true to square foot gardening, you will need to "pinch" these as you see them . If you have a bush variety plant, you should leave them be, but just understand that it may be tough to keep them limited to 1 square foot.

That is the thing. The plant I am concerned about(snow white) is just a cluster of stems right now. I can't see any suckers or side shoots(can easily make them out on the sungold and black cherry).

I tried trimming one of the black cherry stems back. So far that plant seems to be doing well. The other one is more closely clustered and larger so I am hesitant to touch it.

Unless someone here says otherwise, I guess I will let the snow white go and see what happens. Worst case scenario, it fails miserably and I learn. lol. But I have a giant trellis to put to use for 6 tomato plants so a few extra vines will be no concern. It is roughly 8 feet in height and is 8 feet wide. I made my own netting for it too. The varieties I have are cupid, snow white, sungold, and black cherry.

Is it a cluster of stems coming from the ground? As in, multiple plants that were never thinned out? Just leave be, if you have the room. Take a picture so we can see what you are talking about.

Yes, a cluster of stems coming from the ground. It was one seedling I planted deeply as recommended with tomatoes. I know it was one for a fact. lol. If I can find a camera, I will get a picture.

So I managed to get a picture of the Snow White Cherry plant. It is still short with lots of growth and I don't know if I can do anything. Any tips? Ideas? Hope? lol.
