That's so funny you would mention that! We were just in Orlando and went to Epcot... we paid extra to go on the behind the scenes tour of the greenhouses where they do the hydroponics. It was extremely interesting. I think my husband is very excited about setting something like that up at home. It was VERY cool. For example, they harvest 500 heads of lettuce a week to use in the park. Tons of cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes... really super amazing stuff. Needless to say, on Monday, we went to a hydroponics store and did some more exploring.
I read that article on Mel's website - I think it's awesome to apply the principles regarding spacing in a SFG to hydroponics. Definitely seems helpful for those of us in FL who would like to grow lettuce in the summer!

Here's a pic of my setup. I planted the seeds today in Mel's Mix in the little plastic cups. Yes, I got a little messy putting the mix into the cups LOL. 3 floats of different lettuce, 1 bell pepper and 1 broccoli. It should be interesting to see how it turns out! Now I just need some liquid fertilizer.

I used an old waterbed frame & plywood that we had, then I took the old mattress and cut it, turned it inside out and lined the box.

I have a sprout!! Actually two now but I took a pic yesterday of this first one. I planted the seeds Tuesday night when I posted my hydro garden pic. Thursday I had one sprout and today I checked and I have two - in different cups!! :) Both are the Ithica Lettuce. Can you see it?
