You could try the gold Listerine as a milder and less toxic treatment than chlorine bleach. I would still rinse the plants in lean water again before they are introduced into the new environment.

Mike, that's an interesting idea and I've never heard of that before. However, unless anyone has ever tried this, I might be hesitant to experiment.

The reason I mentioned a bleach/water solution is because that's what people use to clean off live aquarium plants when they first come in. Also, based on my use of chlorox, I'm under the impression that it's somewhat of a "universal disinfectant," as far as bacteria and fungi are concerned.

Honestly, I just want to know whether or not a water/bleach solution would do the trick. And, what ratio of bleach to water?

I've always used bleach at 10 to one on aquatic plants.
Mainly to kill snails and algae spores. Generally i use 15 minutes with a through rinse and dipping in water with a declorinater in it. Some plants are quite sensitive to it
Some other choices are pickling alum and Hydrogen peroxide,these can be used straight with a rinse.
Not sure how pathogenic any of these are but have had snail eggs live through both HP and Alum.Have never tried mouthwash.

I know that lots of orchid growers use the gold Listerine and I have myself as well. I am sure you could use a bleach solution but I have not done so myself so I have no idea what ratio of bleach to water should be used.
