Quite a few companies make similar, large, self-watering containers. The "Tomato Success Kit" (see link below) is one example.

I have made several just about like the ones paperart made. Gave several away to friends. Had much rather make them for about eight or nine dollars instead of sixty five. The purchased ones have a little better box but mine have lasted several years and still holding up very well.

I made one for my mom and we are doing a class at church this summer to teach others how to do it. One of the things we are doing too is growing a box or a row (which ever applies) for the hungry. We will donate the produce to our local community food bank. I bet that box does better than all my other ones. :-)

I see I misread your question. I've never made one. I bought one many years ago and converted it to a normal planter after the first year.
