Is your trellis runing E/W? The broccoli and potatoes don't need the trellis space, but the butternut squash and pumpkin (depending on how large they are) sure could. Peas could also use some of that trellis space. Your carrots may also get lost inbetween those vining plants on either side.

Yes, E/W. Good idea moving the vines. I have no idea how to train squash or pumpkin vines. Didn't know I could do peas in the fall...

All you have to do to train the vines is put them where you want them to grow. You might need to very loosely tie them until they decide to cooperate. Sometimes you can wind their tendrils where you want them to be (but they don't always stay at first).

I'm growing Spaghetti Squash (Small Wonder) and Small Sugar Pumpkins now. The spaghetti vines are growing fast (there are pics on my blog if you're interested). They are sharing the ladder I'm using as a trellis.

Check backwards from your frost date to the time needed for maturity. You should do fine.

I tried to train crookneck squash to go up a trellis and the only thing I am doing is tying back the leaves. They grow out not up. If I am missing something here, PLEASE point it out because it has invaded my broccoli and cabbage I planted in front of it! lol

editornj, the vining plants are pretty easy to get them to vine (I have cucumber, tomato, and cantaloupe). I just weave it in and out of my trellis as it grows taller and also take the tendrils and start them winding around the trellis ... they take over from there.

Does anyone know of a yellow squash (straight or crook neck) or a zucchini squash variety that is vining ? Mine was also a bush that I found out too late - AFTER I planted it along my precious trellis space.

This is the vining zuch. As far as I know there are no vining yellow squash or pattypan squash. They are all Bush.

There are also the cucuzzi (rareseeds.com), which are an edible gourd. They are light green, elongated and are eaten like zuchini.

Also the tatume (victoryseeds.com) are round light green summer squash, that grow on a vine.

I've listed one source only, but I'm sure other seed sources probably carry these varieties.

Angela, I did the same thing. I thought all crookneck squash was veining. I have 4 square foot of trellis that isnt being put to use. Oh well, I will know next time!

So... I was out at the garden with a measuring tape this weekend. My husband came out and wanted to know what I was doing. "No, honey, I am noooooot measuring the space around the garden to figure out how I can expand it! Really." : )

(if I can just add onto the end, I can make space for the bush squash next year, since the summer squash vining thing didnt work out for me.)

Add more boxes. It's peer pressure. No one can resist peer pressure.

I booted the zucchini from the raised beds this year. I made a few rings outside the beds for them. So far, so good.
