If Vallejo is CA please consider Late Blight which is present in some areas of CA.

Once the plants are infected it's bad news if it really is Late Blight.

Please go to the thread here on this page called Problem Solver #2 and look for the link to TAMU and look at some pictures of Late Blight (P.infestans), which can appear at any time of the season.

The crispy leaves don't along with that disease but the rapid appearance of dark black splotches does, considering your area, as well as the fact that it's affecting your potato plants as well.

Late Blight is what caused the Irish/European Potato famine and it does affect both potatoes and tomatoes.

Carolyn - thank you for the reply. I went to the thread but I didn't find the link to TAMU. Where abouts in the thread is it?

I did look a few other sites posted there and in the morning I'm going out to the garden to take another close look. I don't think it looks good. :(
