'Husker Red' is just a selection of Penstemon digitalis, which occurs naturally in middle TN. It's not a hybrid, so most, if not all, seedlings will probably look a lot like the parent. I grow the straight species, and many seedlings are even redder than 'Husker Red', and have prettier flowers, too. As far as calling your seedlings 'Husker Red', I think you'd have to propagate the plant vegetatively (cuttings or division, not seed) to be able to accurately apply the 'Husker Red' name. Your seedlings would properly be called just P. digitalis.

Thanks, Marty. I was hoping you would give an answer to my question. I had thought that in order to call a plant by a specific name that it had to propagated from the original plant. Thanks for confirming. By the way, where are you working these days? I met you at Morning Glory Farm several years ago and, of course, I see you on Volunteer Gardener.

I work fulltime at GroWild, a native plant nursery at the other end of Fairview from Morning Glory Farm. After that I'm all over several counties, since I do landscape design on the side. And I'm slowly getting my own nursery up and running. Busier than a one-armed paper hanger, as they say.

I'm embarassingly lousy at remembering people's names, but I'd probably recollect your face if we met at Morning Glory. Unless it was during a sale when we were overrun with people -- at those times it all becomes a blur. :)
