Hi,

I have several plants which have damage at the base of the stem. It looks like something bites into the plant about 1" above the soil line, and then eats halfway through the stem for about 3", and then stops. Apparently it has been a little while because the damage is scarred over. On one plant I found a small black insect, which may or may not be involved in the damage. I will try to attach some pictures:
