angel's trumpets in TN?

angel's trumpets (brugmansia. brugmansia X candida)

i know these trees grow in san fransisco and hawaii, but how do they fare in memphis? i have just discovered them and am desperate to have one.

they are umbrella-shaped trees, with large, long, art-nouveau bell-shaped flowers hanging straight down. i hear they are very fragrant at night and perfect for a "moon garden".

thanks in advance!

thanks! it never occurs to me to keep a tree in a pot, but these look worth the effort.
i will check the local nursery for availability.
how did you come by yours? and what color/s do you have? thanks!

Forget the nursey and come to the Middle Tn. plant swap, the 21st of May. The price will be free. My deck has several and I gave away some I rooted. Thanks to a nice
fellow and his sister that gave me some cuttings.

I planted two in the ground last year and they have both come back here in Knoxville. They do die back to the ground after the first good frost. For faster to bloom time, I would recommend growing in pots. You'll love them and you can't just have one! Check the Brugmansia forum and, especially in the fall, can usually get cuttings for postage.

I have about 40 little 3" babies that came up from seeds the momma plant dropped last summer. Want some ? LOL

I grow them in buckets with 1.5" holes drilled in the sides then sunk into the ground. They do fine and are easier to lift up in the Fall. I have not had a lot of luck getting them to come back from the roots here in Nashville. Some will come back but it takes them so long to get big enough to bloom again.

I get bloom flushes like this in June by planting whole trunks back out in late April, early May.

Then fuller flushes throughout the summer.

Odds are me and my sister are who Norman is talking about.

Cheryl: Let me get this straight....You not only had a seed pod, but it ripened outdoors and dropped seed which is now coming up? Most unusual for where you are.... Bring some of those seedlings to the swap. I want to see them.

Your Brugs are Beautiful!! I must not be feeding mine right, or something...

Hey you smart brug people --

I'm playing with my first brugs this year. I've been wondering -- do y'all do any pruning during the growing season to get that umbrella shape, or does that happen naturally?

amazondoc: No pruning until just before frost, for me. That umbrella shape tends to happen over time when you prune and save the trunks. Each year it will have a nicer canopy. At least that has been my experience.

I'm TNGreenThumb's sister, and I'll have a five-gallon bucketful of brug cuttings at the swap...bring me something nice! (*grin*)

I traded off my versicolor peach brug at the fall swap, got tired of lugging it in and out and taking space in the garage. My yellow brug has stayed in the ground for the second winter now, and won't bloom 'till August. After the first flush it will have about 2 more flushes before it freezes, the last will be the biggest, with about 25 blooms. That doesn't seem like much when compared to the 85 blooms open at once on my versicolor peach in October '02. (Oh the fragrance!)

Thanks for the info! Now if I can just keep em watered through the summer, I may have lovely things to look forward to!
