Nevermind. I just searched on Deer Tongue Lettuce, and it looks nothing like what is growing in my lettuce container. I have two of them. I will try to get a picture tonight.

Maybe a couple of weed seeds that blew in?

Does it look like the flowers from chicory or cupids darts? Thats what I have on 2 of my lettuce plants that just flowered yesterday. It was from a lettuce/greens mix that did not list varieties so I don't know what it is. It does not look like any of the other flowers that I have seen on lettuce or greens but it is very pretty. By the way the plant was light green leaves with just a touch of pink tint. I'm letting it go to seed to save, they were planted in early April and definately did not rush to bolt.

They are petunas.....like FLOWERS! I have NO IDEA how they got in my lettuce seeds but I won't be buying seeds from this place again. I can't believe I have been nurturing FLOWERS!! grrrrr And what kills me is, the other lettuce are all dying. Lettuce just doesnt like me. *sniff*

Of course it likes you Jen! It should have died long ago. Lettuce is a spring/fall plant. It bolts and dies in the summer heat. It loved you to hang on this long! Now, as a memorial to your loyal lettuce, you must plant more lettuce seeds, that it may live on in your memory - and in your salad bowl. This new lettuce will live until the first hard freeze, and if it lives past the first frost - you can take it as a sign that it loves you too. :)
