I've got an early dividend one in one per foot. They seem to be keeping to their own space fine right now with a month's growth.

I've had good results with Calabrese so far. They are spaced a foot apart, about to form buds, and the leaves overlap a little but not enough to be concerned about. Will know about the flavor in 3-4 weeks. I can't wait to have fresh, home-grown broccoli! According to my info I should get at least 35-45 pounds from my 32 plants. Seems like a pretty good return for 32 square feet of space.

From all of the pictures I've seen of broccoli I've been really concerned about placing it in my small SFG. It's good to know that there is a cultivar that stays mostly where it's supposed to. Let me know how it tastes when it's ready. Thank you so much for the information. I'll go look up Calabrese right now.

I'm going to allow 18" for mine next year, as most of the seed packets say to space plants 18 to 24 inches apart. Either that or put all broccoli/cauliflower/cabbage plants just in the corners of the beds where they can hang over the edge on two sides.

I have to agree with granny. My experience treating squares individually and intermixing larger plants like cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and broccoli left me unhappy with the results.

The smaller plants in the adjoining squares just did very poorly.

I am going to keep the larger varieties in areas by themselves next year. Undecided but I will probably keep the 12 inch spacing as they seemed to grown ok.

Something is eating my broccoli... One plant is almost gone - what should I do?

Betty - if it's worm damage, use BT. I'm using spectracide right now on everything, but when the plants start maturing, i'll definitely switch to the BT, which is organic.
