magnolia trees

Just moved to Crossville, TN and purchased a home with several magnolia trees. Can I trim them back at this time of the year? I have one tree in particuar that is about 15 ft tall but needs to be trimmed back, I'm just afraid of damaging it if I trim it now. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
