You don't say which "potting up" you mean. :-)

If you mean you're growing tomatoes in containers and you added the bone meal to the container soil, you probably don't need to do that if you use a complete fertilizer instead, organic or otherwise.

If you only mean that you potted up your tomato seedlings from a seed flat (for instance) to a larger temporary container, you wouldn't need to add bone meal if you're going to set them out in the garden later. You could add the bone meal then if you'd like, bury it deep!

Agree with Anney, bone meal has no immediate benefits as it has to decompose over time and on the surface, no benefits at all. Why was this added?

But were these actual fly maggots or perhaps just small fungus gnats hatching. If fungus gnats the eggs could easily have been in your potting soil. Either way, yes the bone meal would be a nice meal for them.

Thank you for all the information, it is appreciated. I put the bonemeal in the potting soil when I transferred them into 6oz. containers. They still needed some time to grow before sitting them out into the garden, so I was trying to give them exta calcium and some organic fertilizer to boot. I would have to say that they were fly maggots. I went out to water them in the cold frame one day and noticed the soil moving, not to mention the odor. That is how I found them, ooh getting the willies just thinking about it. I got a recipe for making your own soil mix on line somewhere and it said to add it, so I did. Won't ever make that mistake again.

I had a friend suggest putting blood and bone meal on top of the soil in my annual pots to keep the squirrels away. Works on the squirrels but the flies are horrendous! Now I'm worried about maggots.
