It does not make sense to do that while the bulbs are developing/growing. I would just let them grow.

Angela!!! I've missed you lady.

I just planted them about an inch down! How easy is that? I thought I had read that I could just clip the tops and use them like chives or green onions, but I guess I can't, lol: how cheap am I? Pretty freaking cheap!

How long did it take them to sprout? I planted mine about 9 days ago.

Hey Betty, it took them about two weeks. We're pretty warm down here still, though. No frost yet as of November 6th and supposed to be in the 50's at night all next week. Woot! More tomatoes! I might actually have salad tomatoes at Thanksgiving.

Thanks for the beautiful pic of the garlic! WoooHoooo! And, for the explanation. I'm getting my out next week. I can't wait. I was a bit confused, though, on how you know which side is down and which is up for the garlic. I feel this is really a silly question... but, oh well... LOL

I tried it on the turkey, btw, and they are very garlicky. People may be turned off on them as they look like green onions but have a very different flavor. I thought they were great, but our whole family is a bunch of garlic eating fools, so we're probably not the best test subjects.

For the record, mine took 3 weeks to sprout, and some have taken longer than others. The great part about garlic (so I've read) is you can do NOTHING and they'll grow fine. Perfect for me, hehe.

Heh Sinf, us too. Hubby has asked why I don't grow JUST garlic and onions as that would be 25% of our intake, lol.

Yes, you can snip them like chives (I like mine on baked potatoes), just use a light hand while they're still small. Once they get larger you can snip off a leaf at a time for cooking (they stir fry well).
