Lisa, could you please tell us more about what you're referring to?

I know you joined GW just today so probably haven't had time to do any searches here, but there is a long thread about the new flavor enhanced tomato varieties, but those were bred by conventional means just inserting a tomato gene into a tomato gene.

If you're referring to gentically modified tomato varieties, GMO's, there are none right now. There were two, Flavr Savr and Endless Summer, where a gene from a different organism was inserted into the tomato genome, and that's genetic modification, but they were both duds and disappeared very quickly.

There is an experimental variety developed in England that does have a gene(s) from another organism in it, which relates to color of the fruits, but that's the only GMO one I know of right now and it's not available.

What most folks refer to when they speak of the OSU Blue is also an experiemental variety but was bred conventionally and is not a GMO variety.

If I've misunderstood what you're referring to please tell us more of what you're referring to.

Given her post, I suspect that Lisa has been genetically modified.

Hi, Lets Try to be nice here please. I'm not sure if this is what you are talking about but are thinking of hybrid tomatoes as being Geneticaly modified? I think it's a fairly common for people to think that even though thats actualy false.

An entire generation of people, seemingly, have been duped by Monsanto surrogates and an expensive Monsanto advertising campaign into thinking that genetic modifications have been going on for millennia.

    This is BS.

Man has been choosing preferred varieties of plants for millennia that are in existence BECAUSE OF SEX. Monsanto propagates GMOs BECAUSE GENES ARE MODIFIED DIRECTLY.

There is an enormous difference, and the creation of Andura Smetacek by Monsanto surrogates to lie about the genetic pollution of Mexican maize is further proof of what I wrote above.

    [/rant]

Most likely what the commenter meant was "Nowadays they are available in a vast number of varieties because of the patience and skill of plant breeders. "

Daylilyfan is correct. The only non-genetically-modified tomato would be the very first tomato to ever exist, and even that was a "genetic deviation" from whatever came before it from natural mutation. For that matter, every living thing is genetically modified, especially those with multiple parents. Even creatures that can reproduce asexually do not make clones of themselves.

As to what Stellar is talking about now, I'm not sure. Is she asking/stating about man-made genetic modification via selective breeding? If this is the case, she'd be hard pressed to find a tomato that does not fit this bill, unless she is able to find some wild tomato growing in a jungle somewhere. Sorry, but all food available to us is the result of GM via selective breeding as it has been for thousands of years. Now, if she's talking about un-natural GM, such as splicing a gene of jelly-fish or something into a tomato, then as Carolyn stated, such a thing does not really exist on the market.

Just a suggestion, I think it would be a good idea to look at the other posts stellar has made on the GW.

There is a difference between genetic modification and genetic engineering. They are frequently confused, as can be seen in this thread.

Excellent site Dan. For those that don't want to scroll through a long list of science terms:

Genetic engineering: a change in an organism's genes made using recombinant DNA technology. A genetically modified/engineered organism is called a GMO. (More often than not, GE crops are referred to as GM crops, but this is a bit of a misnomer, since all GE crops are GM, but not all GM crops are GE!)

Genetic modification: a change in an organism's genes made through selection, hybrid breeding, mutagenesis, or genetic engineering.

So hybrid tomatoes, or even picking the best from your garden to seed for next year qualify as GM. Making "FrankenFruit" by splicing platypus genes to a tomato plant would be both GE and GM.

Give me a break. What do you think think the intention was in Lisa's post? It is so incomprehensible that I doubt that you can make a determination on this. If you used your brain and followed trudi's suggestion you would have known that Lisa is not here to learn anything or inform us of anything. Next time try to do some work before you spout your mouth off.

Let us be careful. We should always make sure we are talking about EITHER a product of sex OR a product of a laboratory.

Lisa (stellar.bpo) seems to have just a tad to say about a lot of things.

    Posted at The irrigation Forum.
Gardens should be properly and regularly irrigated from time to time.

Posted at The Community Gardening Forum
This approach of forming community garden is really very useful in building a healthy environment.

Posted at ponds and Aquatic plants:
Aquatic Plants act as a food for the aquatic animals and they give a beautiful look under the sea.

    Gardening with Kids:
It is a good way to teach children the value of trees and nature.

Duh...what am I missing? She seems to be preaching to the choir or something.
