There are a good number of hardy ferns that do well in this area. I planted three or four last year that are doing great so far with no more care than the other plants in the yard. The only one I've had for several years, though, is a Christmas fern, which gets larger every year. I think it is reputed to be extra tough over all, so you might try that one first.

While hiking I saw this fern. What is it?

I think it is a Leatherwood Fern (Dryopteris marginalis)but I can't be absolutely sure without seeing it in person. If it feels leathery instead of delicate - it probably is.

We have alot of these & a few Christmas Ferns (Polystichum acrostichoides) growing wild on our creek bank. I LOVE THEM... They look so lush on the slope. I have seriously threatened my DH's life & limbs if he sprays near them to kill honeysuckle or poison ivy. :-)

They get spores on the back of the fronds that will drop & make new ferns. I have transplanted them before too - but they need moist loamy soil similar to what they are growing in & seem to like a little dappled sun.

East Indian Holly ferns (Arachnoides simplicor variegata) grow well here too. They are listed as zone 7 & above, but I have had mine for 3 years & so far so good. They have a really pretty yellow streak down the center.

I REALLY want to get some Royal Ferns (Osmunda regalis)going, but my resident squirrels seem to adore them & destroy them every time I plant one. They can be really big, but I have not gotten one past the squackers yet.

Southern shield fern does well for me. So do autumn fern and holly fern. But I love, love, love the lacy spread of the shield ferns.
