Advice on Tropicalesque gardening

I am currently putting in a tropicalesque/southern garden and am seeking advice from those who have gone before me. I am sure that I am making mistakes in plant choices and hope to learn more. Other than base plantings such as bushes and trees I have put in Windmill Palms, Sabal Birmingham, Sabal Louisiana, Sabal Minor McCurtain County, Basjoo Bananas, Ginger lily (both white and Elizabeth), Madison Jasmine, Carolina Jesamine, Crinum lily etc. I have on hand but will not plant until next year other palms such as Mazahri (sp?), Chilean Wine Palm, Sabal Bermudiana, Giant lily etc. The things that will be getting hauled in every year are Ylang Ylang (both dwarf and regular), Michelia Figo, Michelia Alba , Michelia Champaca, Large Washingtonia Robusta Palms, and variegated ginger. Does anyone have other suggestions for plant materials? I have a large intown lot to work with and have just had the rock edging and flag patio installed and am ready to start planning for the plantings next Spring. The layout is fairly formal and divided into three seperate "rooms" and I have great sunlight in all parts of the yard depending on the time of day. Thanks in advance for your help.
