Look into service berries. There are several varieties, they're native understory trees, and they make nice berries that the birds like.

Actually, I think I bought a couple at the Aboretum in Oak Ridge, but didn't consider them as a widespread planting.

Since you like the redbuds, what if you mixed in some Forest Pansy redbuds as well? I have never had one (I don't care for the leaf color), but my Mom is constantly trying to talk everyone she knows into getting one. LOL My aunt and sister have them. I think they don't get quite as tall as an Eastern Redbud, so maybe the height difference and variation in leaf color would be interesting. ?

If you're looking into shrubs consider arrowwood viburnums or Oak leaf hydrangeas. Birds like the viburnum's berries. Beautyberry is another good native. Dogwoods can be problematic, but you could try the red and yellow twig varieties. Or the gray dogwood which is a smaller native tree and more shrublike than cornus florida. Witch hazels might be a good one since they bloom in the winter.
