If you are going with Hibiscus syriacus (Rose of Sharon), I'd recommend one or more of the sterile triploid cultivars. Hibiscus syriacus 'Aphrodite' (pink with red eye), 'Diana' (pure white), 'Helene' (white with red eye) and 'Minerva' (Lavender and pink with red eye) are all triploids with plentiful and continuous flowering, a compact growth habit, dark green leathery leaves, and little or no seed production introduced by the U.S. National Arboretum.

I like the look of some of the blue cultivars too, but I don't know of a blue triploid. Hibiscus syriacus 'Marina' (Blue Satin) is a popular blue variety.

Hibiscus moscheutos (Rose Mallow) is the other commonly grown hardy hibiscus. Like syriacus, it's totally hardy here, but, while syriacus is a shrub, moscheutos is a perennial.
