We're pulling out a tree in our front yard and would like to replace it. Our Home Owner's Assoc said it has to be a tree that will shade or the county may come pull it out.

We had planned on just planting a queen palm since our front yard will be somewhat of a tropical theme. But, we don't want to risk "that" tree so we'll put palms back further in the front yard.

So, I would like some suggestions for a tree that will grow well here in So Cal and go well with a tropical theme. Maybe something not too messy, too, if possible.
