These are pretty commonly planted around here, but I'm not sure what to add other than the info you got from the web.

They're adaptable to sun or part sun/shade.
They're pretty adaptable to different soil types.
They prefer moist, deep, acidic loam soil but will tolerate slightly alkaline conditions and are actually very drought tolerant.
Protection from sweeping winds is beneficial; needle burn and injury can occur if planted in a location with frequent high winter winds.

Stake young trees to train them so that they won't end up as more of a groundcover. Training may take a while since these are slow growers.
Water well for the first season until the roots become established. After the first year or two, they should be drought resistant and not need much extra watering.

Thanks for your info Brandon. I had wondered if you had one in your arboretum. I was listening to the "Garden Girls" today and they told me of a couple in the UT gardens and a couple around Knoxville as well that I would like to see.

We have one (not planted out yet) at the UT Arboretum, but I don't have one at all in my personal collection. I've seen a number of these, but, off the top of my head, can't think of anywhere to recommend for seeing one locally. Maybe someone (in east TN) reading this will have one and invite you over to take a look.
