That is hosta on the left front.

I have been studying your gardens and they are absolutely stunning. It is very similar to my style, lush with evergreens, formal/semi formal look with pops of color. However, I have never used whites like you have. I have a 2-3 foot narrow strip of lawn in between a sidewalk and stream. It is partshade, and I need some privacy10-20 ft at least in spring/summer. Any suggestions?

I have several homes in the New England area and I always use and recommend using a tall shrub like a Siberian Elm. Planting them 3' apart will quickly give you a nice full wall and even though they grow 45' tall you can easily trim them to size. They are a relatively inexpensive option "Excitinggardens.com"

This allows me to go and pick up something more expensive to use in front of them like a jumbo hydrangea with flowers 6" - 1" at about $25 each they are a nice extra touch but because I do the Siberian Elm in the back I only need 1 about every 5'

Ten to twenty feet this is tall but needs to be skinny.. .. seems like you need a hedge to me for the privacy... How about a hornbeam hedge? You can keep them clipped like the Siberian Elm Matt is suggesting. If I think of something else I will let you know.

Hi Katia - your work is fantastic! We are trying to create something like this in our back yard. What (non-formal) evergreens do you as a winter backdrop/screen for these woodland settings. We are Zone 7.
