slitted plastic row covers

Despite having good luck with WOWs, I was looking for a simpler approach this year.

My tomato beds are raised, boxed beds 2'x 24'. I use a galvanized conduit trellis system that runs down the center of the beds for the full length of the beds. I was wondering about using shorter uprights on the trellis (the 3' sections left over when the trellis was made) to support slitted clear plastic row cover for the length of the beds.Would 5 gallon buckets of water spaced along the beds adequately serve serve as heatsinks in the absence of the WOWs?

Does anyone have any experience with this?
