You will have no shortage of suggestions here for soil mixes and ferts. I like a mix of 5 parts bark fines (pine or fir bark) 1 part peat moss and 1 part perlite- limed with dolomite lime. I like to use synthetic ferts (foilage pro 9-3-6 + pro tekt 0-0-3) in containers because they are available for immediate uptake by the plant. Never had problems with leaf miners but there are several treatment options for all kinds of pests. There is lots of good stuff on container culture over on the Container Forum as well. Good luck!

I would also recommend using Smartpots, the breathable fabric kind, and not hard sided pots...used them last year and the tomatoes grew wonderfully...lots and lots of root development

Many of the best mixes for use in containers - regardless of what you are growing - can be found over on the Gardening in Containers forum here. Check out Al's Mix (Al posts as tapla).

Listen to what Damon is telling you, dont worry about leaf minors, [usually little or no damage]. Ive got some pictures on here that was grown in Als mix, PRETTY MATORS, 20 or 25 threads down. I strongly believe in a soilless medium after using Als mix, works for me very well.
