cold frame for seedlings?

Hi,

I'm wondering if it is advisable to use a coldframe for tomato seedlings. I'm germinating in those cell packs and am now putting them under a fluorescent light in the laundry room once they sprout up. Last night I lost a set of tomatillos, I'm guessing because of poor air circulation (the laundry room is cool, but humid). I could open the window a bit to help with air.

However, I could also just put the seedling out on the deck in a cold frame. I'm planning on growing the tomatoes in containers, so there isn't any soil there. I would be putting my seedling trays on the deck, I'm not sure if that goes against any ideas behind the cold frame - ie is there supposed to be soil in the cold frame which acts as a heat sink during the night?

thanks
