I don't think you can split it, unless it has 2 different trunks coming out of the ground, and even then it would be questionable. They can be moved, best time is right now for transplanting. They are also easy to start from cuttings and a good time for cuttings is right now as well.

I took softwood cuttings from my weigelia a couple of weeks ago...about the time of your initial post. I put the cuttings in water and they started to get root buds almost overnight. I have them in ground right now in a sheltered area to overwinter.

I am also going to move my larger weigelia that has been in the ground for a couple of years now. We just had a large maple tree removed in front of our house so now I want to line my driveway with weigelias
