Idea fro overwintering temperennials

I had a wild hair today when I saw my daylilies sprouting new growth again and realizing how short lived this new growth will be. As many of you know I garden strictly for my hummers and consequently I grow many tender perennials that are only hardy to zone 7-8 and beyond. I was thinking that if I put dark plastic storage containers with the bottom cut out over the plants after the 1st. hard freeze and filled the cavity with mulch this might protect the plants for the winter. Has anyone tried anything like this before? Any pros or cons?
