Yep, in my back yard. He (she?) was calm as can be, not afraid of me at all (not a good thing, really). I took some pictures from a safe distance and height (back deck). It apparently came down through town via a ravine, under the main road and RR tracks, and into my yard down near the Susquehanna River. I caught it in the act of trying to figure out how to get into my squirrel-proof birdfeeder. After eyeing me briefly, it wandered out of the yard and back north again. I called the sheriff to report seeing it, since it was in a residential, suburban area with lots of kids and traffic nearby. It apparently came back overnight to try to open my birdfeeder again, but I haven't seen it since.

"So, that was our home-school nature lesson for the day, kids." (My kids were half freaked-out, half thrilled at seeing the bear HERE. They've told everyone about it now.)
This may be ho-hum to many living in Upstate NY, but it's a big first for us!
