The first year I owned my house here, I planted the garden and had it killed by frost. Replanted and got hit again. I was planning to do it again when I read an article in the paper in which the author said something to the effect that you could tell who was new to Utah gardening because they were the ones who were already planting their gardens. The recommendation in that article was to wait until Mothers day weekend. That's the rule of thumb I've followed since then.

Traditional tilling will cause alot more weed problems. Further, tends to destroy what little soil structure you may have, and absolutely will, if the soil is too wet.

I favor raised beds and top dressing. I am also starting to use clover as a cover crop. It's nitrogen fixing, and attracts pollinators to your garden, but not pests. It usually won't die if you spray other broadleaf weeds with 2-4-D. If it spreads where you don't want it, you can kill it with turflon ester. I believe over time it will help raise the fertility level of my soil.
