root growth question

Last week or so I posted an emergency question regarding my giant belgium that had broken in half*.

I put about 8" of the 1 foot 'start' into water.

There are many large obvious roots starting to poke out up and down what used to be the stem.

Not so obvious are what *appear* to be tiny roots also poking out everywhere. Were it not for the magnifiying

effect of the water and glass I dont think I would have noticed them.

I am not sure if these are the normal 'hairs' you see on

stems or actual root grown. They are so fine and small.

I was under the impression that normally the 'hairs' on a stem are fairly even in length. What I am seeing on the 'start' vary by up to 4x in length.

So, are they super fine roots, or just hairs?

*I had a Monkey Ass tomato suffer the same broken state. I elected for duct tape surgery. So far it's recovering nicely.
