Compost in general is low in nutrients--its real value is in improving the tilth (texture) of the soil. Amending with Leafgro or any other compost without added fertilizer should do the trick. Otherwise, I wouldn't worry too much about it; irises (I'm assuming you're growing bearded irises) are pretty tough plants and tolerate a wide range of soil conditions as long as it isn't continuously wet.

It's true, regular fertilizer with nitrogen will burn iris. Go to the store and buy a bag of just phosphorous. This triggers blooms and they will do just fine. It works well for mine. Check to see if Comanchee Acres has a web site. I buy mine by the case from them and their catalog has great growing advice. Good luck.
