Could you tell me what zone you are?

dhd47 - You can eat the fruit like an apple before it gets soft; my wife likes them that way. Or you can wait until they are soft and spoon out the inside; I like to eat them that way. Persimmons taste a little like a cantaloupe; they are sweet.

what zone are you, do persimmon freeze in your area

I am in zone 5,sometimes 5b. I don't know anybody that has one, but I bought one and currently it is growing well. We shall see what the winter does.

are you planing to undertake any winter protection

I live outside of Spokane Wa. I have it planted in the most protected part of my yard. I bought it from England Nursery. I was told that it is the hardest for my area and should not need extra protection.

The 2017 persimmon harvest from my Fuyu tree was nothing short of amazing. My previous most productive harvest was 2015 when I harvested about 250 persimmons. In 2016 I got about 225. This year, even with a lot of July fruit drop, I harvested more that 350. This is a great tree to grow. We have a lot of squirrels and chipmunks that love to steal the fruit. Persimmons are easier to defend than other fruits because the do not detach easily from the tree. I have started a slow thinning program for the squirrels and chipmunks, using live traps and an air rifle. I hope to thin them to a number that will allow me to share the fruit. My spouse says that it is an impossible task since the squirrels are smarter than I am. From past encounters I have learned that she may be correct.

How old is your tree? I planted one this year. It is only 4 feet tall, and has 2 branches on it. Congratulations on your harvest.

Do you cover it up with a tree net? Do birds eat persimmons?

Persimmons are only vulnerable to birds when they are ripe. Crows are the worst. I don't cover my tree and I lose a few to the birds, but my harvest is still very good.
