Actually from the feedback I've seen at the message sites where I read/post for many years is that most folks get Big Zac F1's, at most, in the 2-3 lb range.

When folks have asked for varieties that can equal that and even get bigger I've usually suggested:

Omar's Lebanese ( seeds originally to me from Omar Sahib)
Cuostralee
Zogola
Red Barn

......just to name a few. And I know others could name some as well. No megabloom stuff, just single fruits as normally grown.

Folks who grow for competitive reasons usually take off most blossoms and small fruits, but I don't think I've seen anyone who prunes foliage to get larger sized fruits. After all, the more foliage, the more photosynthesis, the more energy obtained for ripening fruits and synthesizing the many organic compounds that determine taste. The primary determinate of taste is the DNA but other factors can an do play a role as well.

Thanks carolyn, your book was dead on about the size of Omars BTW, always seem to produce toms over 3 pounds every year for me...they taste great also..but the Big Zac's are bad eating either, much better than alot of hybrids

We have grown Omar's for years and year after year produces our largest tomatoes (two handers!) This year we are going to try Big Zac to see if it is really capable of being the largest tomato. As plant growers & selling at our local Farmers' Market Omar's is always in demand either as a plant or the tomato. Not only does it grow large but is very tasty! Big Zac will really have to be something special for us to "plug" it to sell.
