The old chest type freezer itself would make a great worm bin. That is, as long as they have air and proper drainage.

In my experience, we're in the same zone, you won't be able to leave the bin outside in the winter and expect the worms to live, much less process food waste. You'd have to bring it in, put it in the basement, under the kitchen counter, under the dining table, whatever.

I keep a bin in my classroom (I am an elementary school teacher). There is no issue with smell or anything like that. What I have learned is that it smells best when you have less water in it. My last batch was way too wet and was sludgy.

They slow down in food guzumption as the temps get lower. Mine were in the basement and things seemed slow (I have only a small bin for right now). I moved them upstairs into a cupboard in my kitchen and am married to a man with a very sensitive nose ('sniff sniff, what smells?', or 'sniff sniff something stinks!'), yet he has not figured out my worm bin. Of course I only check on my little lovelies when big lovely is out of the house, but no smell.
