When I first started my mini-bin (I had 2) were flower pot types that might have been the same size as your ice cream containers. I have the link here so you can surf around the pages.

I'm not sure about the 1-gallons being your long time "home" but the small space will make for lots of mating in there!

Don't try to invent a new type of worm bin on your first day. Do a google search on bin types, and spend a few evenings reading old messages on forums like this one and others. You have enough to learn keeping the moisture levels right and learning how to feed properly.

Come on Marshall. I thought that part of vermicomposting is reducing our impact on the landfills. If you have Ice cream buckets why not use them as bins. Just be careful stacking too high, else they may tip over.

The smaller the bin the larger effect that a mistake will have. In a little bin a little mistake will wipe it out! The bigger the bin the less impact a mistake will make.

I've had mistakes that wiped out a bigger bin and in turn a smaller bin also. The big bin was devastated by too much acid and the smaller bin was demolished when it got too wet. I've also had both bins types flourish. Usually if you don't get the bedding too wet and don't overfeed the worms then they should do well.

I think keeping worms in a stack of ice cream containers is a silly idea doomed to failure. That is my opinion.

If you want to discuss ice cream container worm raising with Zollner go right ahead.

I must agree with marshall. I think going that small will cause more problems. I have used 24ltr tubs from the supermarket which is a good size to get you going. follow the links to what I have done.
