You have to take this on a worm by worm basis.

In general citrus, onions, garlic and spicy foods are discouraged. My worms will eat onions, and they love citrus.

Citrus has a chemical in the peel that is toxic to worms. As the peels decompose, the chemical breaks down, and the worms will move in.

As with anything else that is questionable, you can place a small amount in a corner of the bin and see how your worms respond.

There are certain things that have antibacterial or other preservative qualities that prevent them from breaking down right away -- hot peppers, garlic, ginger. There are other substances that the worms don't like, like a substance called "limonene" in citrus fruits.

People say to not put those things in your worm bin. I agree that they probably shouldn't go into a new bin, but once you have a stable ecosystem set up in the bin, it's usually fine to add them in moderate amounts.

So, since your bin is new, I'd skip them for a couple of months. Chances are, you have more kitchen scraps than your bin can handle right now anyway, right?

Worms absolutly love hot peppers they get pounds of them at a time when I'm canning and any other food and peels ect.. If its good for you or was once living the worms can handle it

I recommend pre-rotting pineapple before giving it to your worms. I don't have references to prove that fresh pineapple is bad, just my personal experience. Maybe it was the pineapple I bought in CA? I've read other accounts of problems with pineapple, so it's probably best to be cautious. You can always try small quantities of suspect food and see what happens. Make sure your worms have a safe place to get away if something toxic is introduced. You do not want to smell dead worms.
