It may be a Green Beetle compost grub that are generally found in large compost piles. Photos of the grub can be found on the net if you enter green beetle grub photo.

I have the same grub monsters in my regular compost pile. I recently moved the pile and in a few days dozens of holes appeared where they obviously burrowed up out of the ground looking for the pile. while I was moving the pile I was tossing them off to the sides and all the birds in the neighborhood were dining on them.
